Roof Mounted,
Building Access Equipment
Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Mike was co-owner and General Manager
of J.O.Dougall Ltd., the equipment designer
and manufacturer.
This project included the Design, Manufacture
and installation of the roof mounted Access
Equipment. It was purchased for the building
exterior maintenance and window washing
Special
Design Features:
- Linked four drum personnel hoist designed
for personnel use
- PLC controlled, limit switches,CWT coordinated
to move in conjunction withposition of access
stage. Thereby providing a balanced cantilever
condition that allowed the system weight to
be minimized
- Use of sectional stage system, seesectional staging
- Complex building geometry,PLC coordinated
descent and ascent controls for the personnel

Railway Safety Fall
Arrest Equipment
Mike was President Of Smmart Equipment Inc,
the equipment developer and manufacturer.
This line of safety products was developed
to satisfy the USA, Federal Railway Association
regulations, Part 214 ‘Bridge worker Safety
Rules’.
Special Design Features:
- 3 USA Utility Patents awarded
- Software developed for user configuration
set up
- Research carried out to determine forces
on worker resulting from impact of fall. This
researchprovided the guidelines for understanding
how to bestprotect the worker
- Many features of the research and technology
were adopted by the OntarioMinistry of Labour,
for its regulations developed for fall arrest
systems used for construction workers on structural steel buildings

MODULAR
ACCESS EQUIPMENT, SECTIONAL STAGING |
|
Modular Access Equipment,
Sectional Staging
Mike was co-owner and General Manager
of J.O.Dougall Ltd., the equipment designer
and manufacturer.
This project included the Design and Development
of a Modular Staging Systemfor use in maintaining
the exterior of buildings
Special Design Features:
- Best Strength per Weight Ratio of any Staging
system available at the time
- This system was assembled using tension
rivets in conjunction with specially designed
aluminum extrusions
- Prior to this design, sectional stages
were mostly constructed using aluminum materials
that were connected by welding. Since aluminum
that is welded introduces many weaknesses
in the parent materials, there was a need
to use 40% extra parent material to compensate.
Welded sectional stages experience brittle
failures resulting in worker injuries.As
can be seen in the test picture, the staging
system developed on this project provides
a superior ductile mechanism.
